Handmade Holiday Workshop, Week 1: Holiday Cards
writes, "Handmade Holiday Workshop with Art-Paper-Scissors begins today! Each Saturday between now and Christmas, I will give you inspiration and instructions to help your child make a beautiful and unique handmade treasure to give as a holiday gift. With yesterday's snowfall, and 8 Saturdays until Christmas, this is the perfect time to break out the eggnog and get started!"
This week's project is: Holiday Cards.

Materials:
holiday cards from years past
holiday wrapping paper
holiday magazines
scissors
glue stick
8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper
colored pencils
envelopes size A2 {4 3/8 x 5 3/4}

Directions:
1) Make a Holiday Collage
Using holiday cards, wrapping paper, and magazines, have your child cut out all the holiday images they like {gingerbread houses, stars, ornaments}. Using a glue stick, have them glue the images to an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. Using colored pencils, encourage your child to make drawings, like swirls and stars, in-between the glued images. Allow to dry.

2) Reduce, Print, Cut, Fold
The Eagle UPS Store is a great place for this step. Bring your child's original collage and ask that it be reduced to 50% and printed on cardstock with two images per sheet {images should be aligned along the bottom edge of the cardstock}. Print as many copies as you will need. Cut each sheet in half {the UPS Store can do this for you} and fold the cards. {Optional: For a more professional look, you can round the corners using scissors or a "corner-rounder" tool used for scrapbooking.} Your child will be delighted to see their artwork looking like a fancy finished holiday card. Match up the cards with envelopes that are slightly larger than the finished cards - size A2 {4 3/8 x 5 3/4} will fit perfectly.

3) Store and Prepare
Since it is a little too early for your child to mail their finished holiday cards, designate a special spot for them, like a lidded plastic tote. Be sure to add stamps to your list and toss them in the box with the cards and envelopes. If you want to include a small school photo inside each card, this is a great time to find them, cut them, and keep them with the cards. As the holidays near, your child can sign a card whenever they have some extra time.

Other ideas:
This project can be done using any artwork that your child makes. Lots of beautiful holiday drawings and paintings will soon be coming home from school. As long as they are 8 1/2 x 11, they will work using the directions above.

Any extra cards can be used as thank-you cards, or trimmed to use as gift tags or bookmarks.

Your child will be so proud to mail their cards to friends and family. I wish you a very happy handmade holiday season!
