Handmade Holiday Workshop, Week 2: Altoids Rescue Pack |
catie writes, "This gift uses a recycled Altoids tin as a portable container to hold "emergency supplies" that can be personalized for each recipient. MacGyver fans will be especially impressed with this compact treasure trove of everyday objects useful for fending off minor disasters. "

Materials:
Altoids tin
Spray paint {optional}
Emergency supplies {suggestions below}
Directions:
1) Decorate the Tin
This step is optional and an adult-only step, but it can transform an everyday container into something spectacular. Spray tins with a metal primer, then allow to dry. Spray with spray paint in a color your child chooses. As an extra touch, you can dust each tin with ultra-fine glitter while the paint is still wet. Allow the tins to dry outside overnight.
2) Fill the Tin
You can help your child decide what items would be helpful in a minor "emergency" {such as, no chocolate}. The only specification here is that the items must fit inside the tin. Suggestions: band-aids, stickers, photos, tea bags, lip balm, house key, gum, dental floss, lollipop, nail clippers*, safety pins*, needle & thread*, quarters*, tootsie roll, rubber band, gift card, fun-size snickers, tiny wrapped candy cane, postage stamps, a tiny map & compass, hand-written words to live by, important phone numbers.
Care to share what items your child chose for their Altoids Tin Rescue Pack? Let me know in the comments below.
Other Ideas for Altoids Tin Gifts:
~Use a tin to give a gift card along with something extra, such as a Starbucks card + a handful of coffee beans, a fabric store gift card + a folded square of calico, an iTunes gift card + the lyrics to a favorite song, a greenhouse or nursery gift card + a packet of seeds, a Staples gift card + a tiny rubber stamp & stamp pad.
~Transform a tin into a portable picture frame for family members who travel. Use double-stick tape to attach a photo to each side. Include a sweet note.
