Handmade Holiday Workshop, Week 3: Star Ornament
writes, "Your child can make several of these stars in varying sizes to hang on the tree, decorate a wreath, or top a present. A star could fit inside a big envelope and be mailed to grandma."
Materials:
Recycled cereal box
Ruler
Pencil
Tape
Glue
Various decorations: crayons, colored pencils, watercolor paints, glitter
Ribbon or twine
Small school portrait

Directions:
1) Cut the Points
Using a recycled cereal box, have your child cut five long triangles, all the same size and shape. This can be done freehand, but drawing the cutting lines will make it easier for younger kids. Try this for starters: Cut the front or back from the box. Trim the rectangle down so that it is 5" wide. Along one long side, make a pencil mark every 2 1/2". Along the other long side, starting 1 1/4" in from the edge, make a pencil mark every 2 1/2". Using the ruler, connect the marks with diagonal lines, then have your child cut along them to make five triangles. Try different sizes and proportions. Remember: Imperfections only add to the charm.

2) Connect the Points
Help your child overlap the bottoms of the triangles to make a star shape. On the back side, use tape to secure them.

3) Make a Center
Using another piece of cereal box, have your child cut a circle to glue in the center of the star. {Tip: peel off the slick, printed outside so that it will be easier to glue.}

4) Decorate Your Star
Let your child choose crayons, colored pencils, or watercolor paints to decorate their star. Glitter can be a great final addition. The star in the photo was painted with watercolors, then "painted" with watered-down glue and sprinkled with glitter. Attach a small school photo in the center {we used double-stick tape}.

5) Hang Your Star
Securely tape a loop of ribbon or twine to the back of the finished star.

Other idea: Make lots of stars and spray paint several gold & silver.
