Egg Carton Dragon
writes, "January 23rd is Chinese New Year, and 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. These egg carton dragons are a fun way to celebrate the Chinese Zodiac's most powerful sign."
Materials:
Empty cardboard egg carton
Scissors
Stapler
Card stock in bright colors {we used neon 3x5 cards}
Black marker

This project is borrowed {and simplified} from Family Fun. For the original post {and more complicated directions} please go to: http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/dragon-puppet-973044/

1) Cut
Carefully cut the egg carton: First, cut the bottom from the top, and also remove the latch flap. Second, cut both the top and the bottom pieces in half. Keep one half-top and one half-bottom for the dragon's mouth/snout. Third, from the leftover half-bottom, cut a strip of 2 egg cups for the dragon's eyes.

Carefully cut the card stock: Templates are available at the Family Fun website, but we had good results simply cutting out flame-like shapes for the dragon's beard, whiskers, and eyebrows. We layered green with yellow for the beard & whiskers, and pink with orange for the eyebrows.

2) Staple
Staple the eyes right above the top of the snout, at the back. Staple an eyebrow right behind each eye. Staple the whiskers to the sides of the snout {the dragon's cheeks}. Staple the beard at the bottom front of the snout {the dragon's chin}.

3) Dot
Using a black marker, make two large dots for the center of the eyes, and make two large dots for the nostrils.

4) Animate
Slip your middle and ring fingers under the eyes, and your thumb under the snout to make your dragon roar.

Other ideas:
~ Make a body for your dragon using fabric or tissue paper.
~ Order your favorite Chinese food to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
~ Find your Chinese Zodiac animal based on the year you were born: 2000=Dragon, 2001=Snake, 2002=Horse, 2003=Sheep, 2004=Monkey, 2005=Rooster, 2006=Dog, 2007=Pig, 2008=Rat, 2009=Ox, 2010=Tiger, 2011=Rabbit.

Reminds me of when I was a kid, many decades ago, I made egg carton animals, put them in my wagon, and sold them door to door in the neighborhood. Who knew then that I'd be in sales today! Thanks for the memories!
