June Wellness Challenge: Stay Healthy While Traveling
writes, "The summer travel season is upon us! For some of us that means long road trips and for others it means traveling by plane and being at the mercy of airport food. While vacation is a time to relax and take a break from work, stress, and the usual routine, it shouldn't be a break from your healthy habits."
Plan
Take the time to plan out the food for your trip by doing a little advance research. Check out the web sites for where you're going and learn about the dining and shopping options in the area. If traveling by car, consider bringing some key components of meals with you to prepare at your destination to avoid always having to eat out.

Pack
Prepare a cooler full of snacks for your road trip. I like to bring along a homemade dip such as hummus, cut up vegetables like red pepper slices, snap peas, carrots and cucumbers, trail mix or raw nuts and seeds, homemade energy bars, hardboiled eggs and nature's fast food, fresh fruit. Usually each kid has their own snack bag with things like dried fruit, popcorn and bottled water. When traveling by plane, I will pack similar snacks in smaller quantities.

Pleasure
Don't forget to indulge a bit on foods that bring you pleasure that you don't often get to enjoy. Part of family vacation time is the memories you share together and food can play a big part of those memories. I know personally a trip to the Oregon Coast wouldn't be the same without some saltwater taffy! Mindfully enjoy foods that you don't eat on a regular basis without the guilt.

Traveling doesn't have to result in unhealthy eating. The key is to fill up on healthy foods when you can and make smart dining choices throughout your trip while savoring pleasurable foods in moderation. By planning ahead and knowing your options, you can take a break from your stressful routine but not from your healthy eating.

Remember the three P's, eat well and enjoy your travels!
