Kid-Sized Garden Tools Made from Recycled Materials
writes, "Someday very soon, we will be enjoying our herb gardens and strawberry patches. Get ready by making your own tools for tending and harvesting. Turn an empty maple syrup jug into a little watering pot, and an empty yogurt cup onto a tiny produce basket."
Materials:
Plastic syrup jug with cap, clean & empty
Drill
Drill bits - 7/32 and 1/16
Small plastic yogurt cup, clean & empty
Hole punch
Long produce twist-tie

1) Thumb-Controlled Watering Pot
Note: This involves an electric drill, so please make this an adult-only job. Make sure your maple syrup jug is clean and empty. Twist the cap on tightly and drill a hole in the center of the cap using the 7/32 drill bit. Next, drill about 40 holes in the bottom of the jug using the 1/16 drill bit.

To fill: Make sure the cap is on tightly and submerge the pot in a bucket of water. Once it is full of water, firmly cover the top hole with your thumb. Keep your thumb over the hole and lift the pot out of the water.

To water: Take your thumb off the hole to make the water flow out the bottom. Cover the hole again to stop the water. This watering pot makes a gentle shower for seedlings and other small plants.

2) Tiny Produce Basket
Using a hole punch, punch two holes on opposite sides of the plastic yogurt cup. Thread one end of a long produce twist-tie through one of the holes, and the other end through the opposite hole. Bend and twist to secure. Use your basket for berries or cherry tomatoes or other tiny produce.

Other Ideas:
Try using your watering pot in the pool or bathtub.
Use your tiny produce basket for holding a snack, like grapes, crackers, or carrots.
